3 Ways The Dating World is Different After You Have Kids

Are you back in the dating world for the first time after having kids? Does the culture seem like a foreign world to you? You’re not alone. Honestly, the longer you have been away from the traditional norms of modern dating, the more it seems like you need a passport to participate.

Regardless of how long it’s been, you may feel like you’re a bit out of place now that you have little darlings to care for (or maybe teenagers in their own dating world!). Here are a few things (funny and scary) that you may run into that you didn’t expect.

1. You’re not as confident in your body. Whether you’re a mom who delivered her babies, or a dad that put on some extra “dad weight”, you’re most likely going to be a lot less confident about your looks when you go on dates. Needless to say, this is terrible thinking. Looks only last a short time, it’s who you are that matters.

2. You report to your kids, not your parents. Yeah… Your kids are your new parents. Suddenly, you’re now nervous about explaining to your kids that you have a date or that you met someone and would like for them to meet said person. Your palms are sweaty, you’re worried they won’t approve and anxious for acceptance. Your kids are watching you like a hawk and giving you appropriate hours of the night to be home. Sounds like high school all over again right?

3. Your schedule is busier. You can no longer just decide to go out one night, or meet up for happy hour. Every date has to be planned, with a babysitter in place and the kids firmly taken care of (which we know this could take days to figure out). You’re no longer going out on a whim and coming back at all hours of the night, but penciling in your dates and moving them around your children’s schedules.
